VisComm2, spring 20: Homework week 3, due week 4:
1A: If needed, fix your perspective drawing of the "book tower". Redo.
1B: Copy the perspective (clean) drawing and shade. Use your photo as shadow/light reference. (45min)
2: Pick 3 of your favorite redesigns, of your DESIGNER ideation sketches (homework for today): Circle the ideation sketches:
Draw each object/product in 3 different angles, Prisma and marker. There should be 1 main view (1 page) and 2 smaller (other VP/angles, on second page): Main view (large (8x11) should be shaded with marker, 2 smaller ones, just sketched, line drawing. Make notes of materials you iomagine your object is made of, and try out rendering technique as a small sample swatch. (2.5h)
9 drawings in total!
Don’t forget the info block on EACH page.
Bring in your favorite object (again).
Step by step demo of patent leather shoe:
Materials used:
Verythin to sketch shape of shoe.
Navy blue marker base. Blocking out.
Dark grey marker for shadows and and white pastels for highlights/shine.
Cotton squares and electrical eraser.
White or grey Prisma for seam stitching.
Black thin point marker.
Step by step demo of how to quick render a car with marker:
Materials used:
Verythin to sketch shape of car.
Yellow marker base. Blocking out.
Medium grey marker for shadows and and white pastels for highlights/shine.
Black marker for windshield/windows.
Cotton squares and electrical eraser.
Black thin point marker for details.
Create your own grid:
Step by step demo of leather bag (with metal studs):
Materials used:
Verythin to sketch shape of bag.
Black marker base. Blocking out.
Light grey and white pastels.
Cotton squares and electrical eraser.
White Prisma for seam stitchings.
Brown marker for copper studs.
Yellow marker to make it lighter.
Black thin point marker.
Velvet purse:
Materials:
Verythin to draw shape.
Marker base, mix colors if needed. Let it dry.
Pastels: Grey, black and white.
Prismas: Black and white.
Blend.
This seems the most challenging texture, because of the somewhat dull but changing shine: Perhaps just pastels, without the marker base could work better.
Fur purse:
Materials used:
Light grey marker for under drawing.
2 tones of beige marker base.
Light pastel coverage.
Electrical eraser.
Grey pastels for darker areas.
Prismas: Brown, grey.
Felt hat:
Materials used:
Black Verythin.
Brown or beige pastel.
Grey pastel and white pastels for shadow and light.
Brown Prisma for details.
Student example: Satin bomber jacket:
Rendered similarly like leather (see image 1) but less contrasts.
Important: Pay attention to the proportions to each other!: Stand, neck, cup size, length, width, circumference etc.

Rendering metal:
To render any surface, texture, it takes a lot of trying out and experience. Tial and error - and patience:)
Like I demoed in class, we start of the page creating our shape/silhouette of our object, with either marker (light) or Verythin. Proportion is key! Before you start layering your textures, check on your proportions of your object and correct if needed.
I prefer to render metal with layers of markers, starting with the lightest. A grey paper helps to create the illusion of shine. Treat reflections as shapes. Simplify.
White Gouache can add highlights.
Dull metal or stainless steel is less shiny, and therefore I'll recommend to add a layer of white or light grey pastel on top of the marker gradiations.

Rendering wood:

Rendering wood: 1. I'm layingh down a base color with either marker or (I prefer) Pastel. With a blender, eraser, cotton squares I'll blend. With Prisma and an electrical eraser I'll texture. Shadows with either a grey pastel or grey maker will create the illusion of dept.
